After an extremely grueling five years, Spider-Man finally returns to theaters this July, and I’m extremely excited to witness another masterpiece of a movie. But it’s not just me who’s excited; everyone else is. Breaking a new record on YouTube, the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer surpassed 718.6 million views in just 24 hours. We Marvel nerds are finally getting what we wanted: A Spider-Man who’s at rock bottom and must figure out how to be a superhero on his own. Only true fans of the character will know how much good content comes from Peter Parker, whose life is completely horrible.
With an absolutely stacked cast, Tom Holland will share the screen alongside Jon Bernthal as The Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. We’re getting a movie with three superheroes who’ll either make Peter’s life easier or create a complete mess. With a bunch of returners, such as Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned, the movie brings in some new members to the cast, like Sadie Sink and Marvin Jones III.
On top of that, the trailer also looks absolutely beautiful. The colors are very bright, the humor surprisingly mixes well with the “dark tone” of the movie, and it looks like there will be non-stop action. There are also multiple shots of the film that are ripped straight from the pages of comic books. I believe this could be the most “comic book accurate” version of Spider-Man we’ve ever seen. However, it goes without saying that I do, of course, have some concerns about the movie.
The two biggest things that concern me are the plot and the number of new characters included. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like there will be too much going on in the movie. This movie will feature about five to six new villains in just about two hours of screen time. How are they going to fit all of those plot lines in such little time? From what Marvel has released so far, it kind of seems as if the plot will be all over the place. Part of me is getting major Spider-Man 3 vibes with numerous villains, but that movie only had three of them and look how it turned out.
With that being said, we can’t fully judge a film that hasn’t come out yet. Even though I have my concerns, it was still a pleasure seeing the trailer, and I would be lying if I said I’m not looking forward to it. This year is going to be a good one for superhero fans, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is adding onto that.
