Harry Styles makes a comeback to live performances the only way he knows how to-brilliantly, at his Netflix Special One Night in Manchester. On March 6th, less than 24 after the release of his fourth studio album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, Styles took the stage in Manchester, England to perform a show like no other. He emphasized that this show was going to be a unique experience for everyone involved, including himself, and he delivered that promise in a variety of ways.
As fans entered the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester, they were required to put their phones into camera-blocking plastic pouches that were provided upon arrival, abiding to a strict no-phone policy. Instead, all fans were provided with free digital cameras to capture special moments from the show in a more limited and less distracting manner. The elimination of screens compelled fans to enjoy the music in a deeper way, leaning more into the music, living in the moment, and creating connections with everyone around them. Looking around the arena, the lack of devices was evident, emphasizing the electric energy the audience perpetuated through unabashed dancing and singing.
Styles opened the concert by speaking directly to his audience, saying, “You have one simple job, and that is to have as much fun as you possibly can. If by some miracle you know the words, please do join in with us.” Though the album was released less than 24 hours before the concert, fans delivered on his invitation to join in and sing with him, with thousands of people echoing the words they had already learned over this short period of time.
Styles played the entirety of his new album from start to finish, in order, accompanied by a live orchestra, chorus, and other musical talents. Throughout the course of the show, he made sure to pause and highlight the individual talents and names of every performer accompanying him on stage, simultaneously showcasing the collaborative effort that went into this performance as well as the appreciation he has for this art form. During the show, he wasn’t worried about hitting specific choreography, singing every line, or being perfect by any means. He just kept the energy flowing and embodied fun, and it worked.
When Styles finished the top-down run-through of his newest album, he surprised his audience with an encore consisting of five songs from his previous albums. He delivered poignant performances of “From the Dining Table” and “Sign of the Times,” songs from his debut album that hold a special place in the hearts of all of his fans, alongside vibrant renditions of his earlier hits “Golden,” “Watermelon Sugar,” and “As It Was.” After delivering an emotional farewell speech thanking his crew, musical guests, and the fans, Styles closed the night the same way he started it: with a performance of “Aperture.”
Harry Styles’ One Night in Manchester concert lived up to its promise of a once-in-a-lifetime performance, solidifying his title as “The Prince of Pop.”
