Speechless: My Reaction to Seeing Helmet Perform Live

by Olivia McGuin

September 19-21 was my third time attending Riot Fest. The punk rock festival is something I look forward to annually and this year was extremely special to me. I got to attend with some of my close friends and fellow WONC members, and I got to witness my favorite lineup so far.

While I was unsure of every band I wanted to see going into each day, I knew, no matter what, I had to see Helmet. The New York metal band is easily one of my all-time favorites. Originating in 1989, the band has upheld their popularity and legacy for almost 40 years. I first discovered them through a family friend and have been obsessed ever since. I saw the group open for Korn in 2022 and have patiently been waiting to see them again. I was so impressed the first time around and knew this time would be no different.

After learning Helmet would be playing at Riot Fest, it was also announced that they would be playing their Betty, their 3rd studio album and my personal favorite, in full. The band later announced this would be their second to last time playing the album in full, concluding their Betty 30th anniversary tour. I was especially eager to see them after hearing this, knowing I’d be witnessing the end of a musical era. I listened to the album on repeat leading up to the event in anticipation.

When the band took the stage, I was immediately impressed. Their lead singer, Page Hamilton, has an incredible stage presence. After a short introduction, the band started playing the album. I enjoyed how fast paced their performance was. Hearing songs, such as “Tic” and “I Know,” were two of my favorite parts of the set. These have been my favorite Helmet tracks for years and seeing them live completed a part of me that felt missing. After concluding the album, the band played an encore consisting of three songs off their Meantime album.

Overall, I had an amazing time seeing Helmet live. Despite seeing the band three years ago, I favored this performance more. It was such an exciting feeling being in the second row and having a clear view of the band. I enjoyed how excited the crowd was; having a crowd participate and show enthusiasm completely alters the dynamic and experience of going to a concert. Despite the band members getting older, they still perform great. I undoubtedly will be seeing Helmet again next time they come to Chicago.
