After being stuck in development hell for over a decade, the massively popular video game franchise Uncharted is finally getting its own movie, and the film’s star has shed some light on what audiences can expect from the action-adventure romp.
“I think the easiest way to describe the film without belittling it in any way is like if Indiana Jones and James Bond had a baby, it would be Nathan Drake. That is the way I keep describing the film.” – Tom Holland
Uncharted is a popular gaming franchise created by Amy Hennig and developed by NaughtyDog. The series follows Nathan Drake: adventurer, treasure hunter, and thief. He very much takes after Indiana Jones; in fact, the entire series was inspired by the iconic archeologist. So, it’s no surprise that Holland said his film will take cues from the Indiana Jones series. James Bond comparisons are where things get more interesting. Nathan Drake has a certain swagger and charm to him that could certainly be likened to a Bond-esque character.
It’ll be interesting to see how the film adaptation will attempt to stand out from not only the Indiana Jones series, but also the video game franchise. Video game franchises going from game to movie have been notorious for being awful, and the best video game movies are only considered to be “ok” by audiences. There has yet to be a genuinely great video game movie. The Uncharted series has always held praise for being a playable cinematic experience, so hopefully it can be the film that finally breaks the curse.
Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, is slated for release in theaters February 11, 2022.
